DCC 2015 Saturday Night Shindig Art

dcc_shindig_art_feature.jpg

My buddy and frequent DCC collaborator Devin Pike asked me to contribute the key art for this years Dallas Comic Con Shindig after-party extravaganza... so here's Captain Mal in his underwear in a Barcolounger playing the classic MTV game show Remote Control. If we can get this to happen in real life my year will be made!dcc_shindig_art_web

Captain Tightpants here will appear on poster art and on the official VIP Shindig Badges. The Shindig starts Saturday, May 30th at 7PM, tickets available here.

Summer Art Dump: Album Covers

Summer Art Dump: Album Covers

destroy_feature.png

This Summer Art Dump post contains two album/single covers done over this past summer. The first is for The Crayondroids single Destroy All Humans. The robots are based off of previous designs and I couldn't help but throw in a Kang and Kodos reference to round it out. DAH_Web

The second illustration is for a forthcoming mixtape My Introduction by rapper Louie St. Claire and was also layered-out for use in forthcoming videos by my friend Charles Frisby.

Summer Art Dump: Go-Rilla Movement

Summer Art Dump: Go-Rilla Movement

This fully illustrated logo for Go-Rilla Movement is another piece I got to really run wild with. From the initial pitch of "Bad-ass Sergeant Gorilla Crushing some Chains" I knew it was going to be a fun project with an awesome payoff. gorilla_logo_colors

One of the joys of working with start-ups is they're typically more willing to let you trust your instincts and push the envelope past what a more corporate-minded client might be comfortable with. That trust is what builds the best sort of designer/client relationship, and I think it really shows in the work.

Summer Art Dump: Custom Gaming Mats

Summer Art Dump: Custom Gaming Mats

Talk about a dream gig! This series of 6 custom painted play mats was commissioned by my homestore Madness Games & Comics for their 2014 Star Wars X-Wing Miniature Tournament. mat_full

It was a bit surreal walking in on game day and seeing dozens of games going on right on top of artwork I was working on just a couple of weeks ago. I still get giddy like a schoolboy when I see my art being used for something cool and unique like this.

madness_gaming_matsHere a couple of videos from my Instagram account of the finished pieces in action.

Summer Art Dump: West Elk Bicycle Classic

Summer Art Dump: West Elk Bicycle Classic

West_Elk_Poster_Comp.jpg

To say it’s been a busy summer would be an understatement. Between the ending of a long-term relationship, a parent diagnosed with lung cancer and a shift in focus to original art it has been one hell of a hectic and novel ride. It’s also been very productive and without further ado I present Part 1 of the ArtOfWarlick 2014 Summer Art Dump: The West Elk Bicycle Classic.

West_Elk_Poster_Comp

This piece was commissioned by the organizers of the West Elk Bicycle Classic for this summers not-a-race through Crested Butte. This was a treat to work on as they let me have pretty much free reign with the concept and execution.

There are two versions currently floating around Colorado, one with the copy and logo lock-ups and another, rare run without them.

Redesigning SETI

Redesigning SETI

seti_feature.png

As Creative Director I get to do a lot of design work for Idea-loop, a web and app development shop founded by my buddy Chris McCroskey, and recently we had the opportunity to work on a project near and dear to me, the SETI program at UC Berkeley California.seti_logo SETI's goal, if you don't already know, is to scan the stars for signs of intelligent life by looking for patterns and order among the various frequencies of the universe.

seti_ss

We started out with a mandate to update the site, but it quickly became aware that they needed a complete overhaul of their digital presence. You can see a complete breakdown of the logo rebranding process at the end of this post.

Fast forward several months to now, and the site has just launched, and I couldn't be more proud and humbled and awestruck and speechless to have worked on, what I feel, is an immensely important project that could someday change the face of humanity.

You can check out the new site and logo at seti.berkeley.edu

Below is the full logo case study I put together for Idea-Loop.
